Microsoft Edge's New PWA Install Dialog Is More Informative

Microsoft Edge has recently updated the Progressive Web App (PWA) install dialog to make it clearer, easy to understand, and simple for users to indicate what happens when they install a web app in the Edge browser.

PWAs built using web technologies can be installed and run on all devices from one code base. PWAs have application icons that can be added to a device’s home screen or taskbar. They can be launched automatically when an associated file type is opened, and they can run when the user signs in.

Microsoft and Google have collaborated to make PWAs more native Apps when installed on supported devices from the browser. Recently, Microsoft launched Sidebar Apps in the Edge add-on store, Chrome added support for Tab tearing. with advancements happening for PWAs, the install dialog should be precise.

When you install a PWA in Edge browser by clicking its icon in the address bar, till now, Edge showed the following dialog:

To tell the truth, the install dialog doesn’t convey what happens when you install PWA in simpler and more understanding terms to the users.

Here, it means that the website you are visiting has been designed to function like a native app, and you can install it on your device like any other app. Once installed, the PWA will open in its window, separate from the browser, and will have its icon on the taskbar or home screen. PWAs can also safely integrate with Windows features, such as notifications, and live tiles, can be uninstalled from Settings App, and more.

Edge’s new PWA install dialog is more informative and improves the installation experience

Microsoft has updated the PWA installation dialog in Edge 122 canary and dev with the following description:

Use this site often? Install the app which:
. Opens in a focused window
. Has quick access options like pin to taskbar
. Syncs across multiple devices

The new install box is more intuitive. The changes in the dialog box provide additional information about the app’s features such as it opens in a focused window and it has quick access options like pin to taskbar, and syncs across multiple devices. The present dialog misses that, where the new install box mentions that.

The key difference between the two dialogs is that the new dialog is more user-friendly and provides more information about the benefits of installing the app. The new dialog makes it more likely that users will install the app.

The post-install dialog wasn’t changed. It remains the same to inform the user that the app has been installed on their device and will safely run in its window. Users can launch it from the start menu, taskbar, or desktop.

In conclusion, Microsoft Edge users may find the new PWA installation dialog more useful. Chrome’s PWA install dialog is not affected by this change.
