Have you got used to Microsoft Paint’s Cocreator, the AI tool that lets Paint users automatically generate art with the help of AI? Now get ready for Microsoft Notepad Cowriter AI, which pretty much functions the same as Cocreator.
Spotted by Windows enthusiast, @PhantomOfEarth, Notepad Cowriter AI has a similar feeling to Cocreator. Once users have access to it, they will be given a certain amount of credit to use for different tasks. For now, it seems Cowriter is capable of the following tasks:
- Rewrite
- Make shorter
- Make longer
- Change tone
- Change format
Cowriter can be found in Notepad version 11.2312.17.0 in Windows 11, as spotted by @PhantomOfEarth, but it’s not yet functional, so the options mentioned above are not working just yet.
However, the AI tool will most likely be released as a preview to Windows Insider Channel in the following weeks.
Notepad Cowriter AI: What you need to know
The Cowriter AI is similar to the Cocreator AI. Users will have to join a waitlist for the preview, and as we mentioned earlier, once granted access to it, they will have a certain number of credit points that they can use to make Cowriter work on tasks.
However, as spotted by the Windows enthusiast, these credit points will be restored regularly.
Some strings related to Cowriter credits “You’ve reached the credit limit” “You’ve used all of the available credits, credits are restored every x-amount of days.”
@PhantomOfEarth
In a similar manner to Cocreator, Cowriter will help users compose, write, and edit texts, with options for summarizing and changing the tone of the writing style. The tool could be useful for those individuals working in creative jobs, or those who want to quickly edit long passages of text.
However, until we can get our hands on the new AI tool, we can’t say much. On the other hand, a lot of Windows users, including the spotter themselves, are not entirely happy with this new addition.
My opinion on this: I feel like this is a bit much. Something else could have been added to Notepad instead of AI but hey gotta ride the hype train.
@PhantomOfEarth
This is really a disappointment for me, I really would have liked them to put a font viewer to see our fonts without going to settings and doing all that, I would really like to have a font view in notepad to write in different types of letters .
@semeeter
I have yet to see one real person that’s actually happy about the recent shoving of AI into everything, especially where it doesn’t belong.

While Cocreator is capable of incredible results, at times, and you can see just how good it is in our comprehensive guide on how to use it, Cowriter seems like a lazy idea. Unless it can offer solutions for real issues, such as editing, correcting grammar mistakes, and so on, users can always go to Copilot to generate texts for various tasks.
Plus, Notepad is widely known and appreciated for its simplicity: the design is very user-friendly, and the app runs fast even on low-end devices. Adding an AI tool to it might slow it down a bit, so it will be very interesting to see if Cocreator will be adopted by users, or not.
Either way, let us know your opinion about this new tool in the comments section below.
